Church Stained

Are statues architectual?

Basically im doing an art project and the main topic is Architecture. we don't have to narrow it down yet so basically we have to fill our books with a wide range of things. and i was wondering what would class as architecture. i have windows, door, houses, buildings, arches, churches, stain glass windows

but i wasn't too sure if statues came under architecture

Mainly in the past, sculptural elements were included into architecture as decoration. But generally would not be considered a part of the structural elements. For instance fluting on a columns is more of a decoration than functional. A design element used to emphasize height and cosmetically to make the columns appear straight, hiding a slight bulge and then tapering in the columns. . However there have been on occasion the column or two that has been carved as a figure but functions as a column. As in the example below, the Maidens of Caryatids at the Erechtion,on the Acropolis, Athens, Greece. Do note that even thought they are representations of figures, there are still capitals on top their heads,( LOL, or are they just really bad hats?),as with any other columns And they each stand on a base, Capital and base,two parts of a column. These maybe more the exception than the rule as far as sculpture used as a structural element

Using columns again as an example. the basic idea of a column was originally very plain and only over time did it became quite ornate. Especially during neoclassical times when they went crazy with the Corinthian capitals.
Underneath all of the intricate carving there is still the basic structural element of the Doric column at work..
So I guess what I am trying to say is that the sculpture is still sculpture and was used to decorated the structure. And is not a functional part of the structure
